Periodontal disease occurs when the gum tissues become inflamed, a stage typically known as gingivitis. This could be due to poor oral hygiene and/or a diet high in sugar, which increases oral acidity and plaque buildup, irritating and inflaming the gum tissues. Other factors could include a family history of the disease, inflammatory illnesses, or even the use of certain medications. Tobacco products are a common factor as well!
The disease develops when the tissues pull away from the teeth and form pockets for bacteria to enter. There is no cure for periodontal disease, but treatment is needed to manage it and prevent the later stage of periodontitis, which can cause adult tooth loss. You could also develop gum recession, in which the tissues pull back and expose the sensitive portions of tooth root structure. This recession leaves you vulnerable to tooth decay, dental infection, and even loose or missing teeth with time. You also develop issues with your smile’s appearance too!
Our team can offer a treatment to address gum recession and improve the health and beauty of your smile. Instead of traditional gum grafts, we offer a conservative alternative with the Pinhole Surgical Technique™, or PST™. The procedure involves our team making a miniscule pinhole in the gums and adding a collagen material. We then manipulate the tissues so they cover the teeth as they should, and provide a symmetrical and attractive gum line. We may use lasers as part of the procedure to remove diseased tissues and help reshape the gums and certain structures in the smile.
With this procedure, there is little to no bleeding, a reduced risk of infection or swelling, and no need for sutures. The area heals quickly and you may return to your normal routine after only a day of rest. This also offers a more attractive smile too! If you have any questions about treating your gum recession with the PST™ system, then contact our team today. We want to help your smile stay healthy and whole for years to come!
