According to the Centers for Disease Control, half of adults aged 30 and older will develop gum disease. Without treatment, the disease will grow in severity and eventually reach a stage known as periodontitis, which could mean adult tooth loss. The causes include issues that inflame the gums to cause gingivitis, such as poor oral hygiene habits (lack of brushing and flossing), visits for checkups and cleanings, and plaque buildup which irritates and inflames the tissues. The use of certain medications and inflammatory illnesses are also factors, as well as a family history of periodontal concerns.
When gingivitis is untreated, this could allow the gums to pull away from the teeth and form pockets for disease-causing bacteria to enter, leading to periodontal disease. You may notice sore, red gums and experience bleeding. As it worsens, the tissue could recede. Not only will discomfort increase, but as we touched on above, you could begin to lose natural teeth. In fact, this is the number one cause of adult tooth loss! We want to help protect your periodontal health by managing the disease, and that starts with treatment using advanced dental lasers.
The Periolase and Waterlase systems use a concentrated beam of light to target and treat areas with precision and accuracy. The lasers allow us to trim away diseased tissues and ligaments, so healthy ones can adhere to the teeth and reduce the depth of periodontal pockets. Moving forward, we can help manage the issue with simple cleanings every three to four months. Lasers prevent damage to healthy tissues, and cauterize the area, so the risk of bleeding, infection, and swelling is significantly decreased. No need for sutures and often no need for anesthesia either. You heal quickly and return to your normal routine much faster than with scalpels and sutures too.
If you have any questions about the benefits of the periolase system, then contact our team today. We want to help you and your family enjoy optimal gum health for years to come!
