The disease occurs when the gums become inflamed. Known as gingivitis, this stage occurs due to plaque and tartar buildup, lack of brushing and flossing, infrequent dental cleanings, or a diet high in sugar and starch, tobacco products can be a factor, as can certain medications, inflammatory illnesses, or even a family history of gum issues. Over time, this can cause the tissues to pull away from the teeth and form pockets for harmful disease-causing bacteria to enter. Once periodontal disease forms, there is no cure, but care to manage the issue and protect you from the later stages, which are linked to adult tooth loss.
You should let us know when you experience potential warning signs of gingivitis or gum disease. We can take action to reverse gingivitis, or manage gum disease, to keep your smile healthy and whole. Common warning signs could include soreness in your gum tissues, redness, or discomfort. Swelling could occur, as could bleeding. If your tissues recede, which makes teeth appear long or uneven, let us know. This could expose sensitive portions of the tooth and allow tooth decay or infection to form alongside your worsening periodontal disease symptoms.
Our team can offer a holistic approach for the early stages, or to manage the disease following our more advanced treatments. We could discuss ozone therapy, supportive periodontal maintenance, or cleanings every few months. We have special medications that can help too.
With laser dentistry, our team can gently and comfortably remove diseased tissues so healthy ones can adhere to the teeth. We also have a conservative alternative to gum grafts with the Pinhole Surgical Technique, which uses lasers and special collagen materials to manipulate tissues and cover the teeth again. If you have any questions about how we treat these concerns with our lasers or holistic treatments, then contact our team today. Everyone deserves a whole and beautiful smile, and we’re ready to help you!
